‘Cold War’ brings Christopher Sebela into the AfterShock Comics fold
Imagine a world where the sick and dying can enter cryogenic sleep and dream through generations until science is finally able to cure their ills. Sounds incredible. Only, in this world, these suriviors have their trust rewarded with a lifetime of murderous servitude. That’s the premise to Cold War, and it’s going to blow your mind.
Cold War doesn’t just bring readers another thrilling title from AfterShock Comics, it unites the publisher with a writer whose daring and dauntless talents are perfectly suited to their own.
“AfterShock has been putting out a lot of books by writers I know and admire and teaming them up with really great artists who I didn’t know before but am a huge fan of now,” Christopher Sebela, writer of such killer projects as Demonic, Heartthrob, and Injustice, said in the official press release. “And talking with them, they were invested in me telling the story I want to tell. I’ve been wanting to do ‘Cold War’ for years and had a couple false starts on it. No one ever agreed to do the book I wanted to do, they wanted variations on it. AfterShock loved it the moment I pitched it to them and told me to go for it. They’ve been hugely supportive all the way and their vision is both the same as and really different from mine, so combining the two into what this book has become is the magic part of comics I love best.”
The all-new series teams Sebela with The Few artist wunderkind Hayden Sherman, whose distinctive style evokes memories of Frank Miller’s days rendering books like Daredevil and Ronin. That’s a good fit, considering the mix of genres at play here.
Says Sebela: “I like to merge genres as much as I can without breaking any of them. I always wanted to do a war book, but it had to be different, had to bring something else to the table other than the traditional one side vs another. So this is my stab at merging war and sci-fi and horror and crime into one messed up package. It’s got big explosive visuals and world building, it’s got tons of mysteries layered one over the other and it’s got characters who aren’t just interchangeable action figures but real people who are trying to live through a nightmare that they paid for. I think it’s one of the crazier books I’ve written and I think fans of any of these genres will be into ‘Cold War’.”
