Threadless announces its “Lord of Light” line in time for Jack Kirby’s 100th birthday
By Brandy Dykhuizen. Today would have been Jack Kirby’s 100th birthday, and what better way to celebrate one of comics’ most innovative and influential artists than by strapping one of his stunning Lord of Light panels across your chest? Well, now you can do just that.
Threadless, the online creative community, has one again teamed with the legendary sci-fi magazine Heavy Metal for a fantastic collaboration, one forged specifically to launch a line of shirts, hoodies and other textiles emblazoned with spectacular artwork by the legendary Mr. Kirby.
“Threadless and Heavy Metal share a similar goal: to celebrate great art,” says Threadless CEO and founder Jake Nickell. We feel pretty certain that was Kirby’s primary objective as well. His super saturated scenes transition insanely well from readable to wearable, or, heck, even bedecked on a beach towel. Who wouldn’t want to roll around in the sand wrapped in the Hostel of Hawkana?
Threadless’ Heavy Metal series showcases several of Kirby’s architecturally focused landscapes in arresting symmetry, jumping off the fabric in contrasting canary yellow and magenta. Behold, the Chambers of Brahma! Threadless is even making laundry day less drab, one candy colored bag at a time. (Okay, nothing’s actually going to make cleaning the coffee and pizza grease out of your clothes any more fun, but you gotta love ‘em for trying.)
If you want to express your love for all things Heavy Metal, Threadless has plenty of logo Tees and tanks as well. And what Heavy Metal collaborative tribute would be complete without a visit from Chris Achilleos’ Taarna atop her Bosch-esque beast? Whatever color your love for Heavy Metal, Threadless has you covered.
Take a gander and celebrate a true comics legend and fantasy/sci-fi institution. Happy birthday, King Kirby.
