by Molly Jane Kremer and Jarrod Jones. We’re still working on accepting that Giant Days is coming to an end, but Friday night’s Eisners made things all right.
The book (written by John Allison, illustrated by Max Sarin and Julia Madrigal, colors by Whitney Cogar and letters by Jim Campbell) took the Best Continuing Series and Best Humor Publication Eisners this year, a balm of sorts for the searing reminder that, yes, Giant Days is still coming to an end this October. (Jeez Louise, do we love Giant Days.)
Giant Days won out over an incredibly stacked deck in the Continuing Series department, besting The Immortal Hulk, Batman, Black Hammer: Age of Doom, Runaways and Gasolina, proving that the world does in fact make sense sometimes.
There were other, non-Giant Days related wins, to be sure. Mister Miracle took a victory lap on Friday night, with Tom King winning his first solo Eisner for Best Writer (he shared the honor with Monstress’ Marjorie Liu last year) and Mitch Gerads winning his second consecutive Best Penciller/Inker Eisner for his work on the series. Then Mister Miracle went and took the Best Limited Series award, because it could and nobody was about to stop it. King also shared a win with artist Jason Fabok for their short story “The Talk of the Saints” featured in Swamp Thing Winter Special.
And since we’re talking about Tom King, The Vision also won Best Graphic Album Reprint. In all, a very good night for Mr. King, and a very good night for DC, which won the most awards out of all publishers with 10 Eisners to brag about first thing tomorrow morning.
Image Comics took second place with 7 wins, and First Second Books slid onto third with 5 wins total with awards for Is This Guy For Real? The Unbelievable Andy Kaufman, The Divided Earth, and The Prince and the Dressmaker.
The latter of which scored writer/artist Jen Wang two Eisners, for Best Publication for Teens (ages 13-17) and, well, Best Writer/Artist. Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, writer and creator of La Borinqueña, and artist Tula Lotay, for her work with Though Bubble, both won the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award. Matt Wilson won his second Eisner for Best Coloring, with Marvel editor Nick Lowe accepting the award in his place. Lowe, at the behest of Wilson, took the occasion to honor colorist Justin Ponsor, who passed away earlier this year.
The DoomRocket Award for Most Surly went to Chip Zdarsky, who sauntered on stage after one too many chardonnays with dinner, and claimed his Eisner for Best Single Issue (Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310). Well won. Good Chip!
