Fire flickers with contradiction. A burning desire for freedom may become bitter ashes of autonomous dreams. Fires of rebellion are extinguished with torched homes and the stench of charred flesh. Words spoken in crucibles of conflict ignite blaze-of-glory willingness to die for a cause. The riddles of flame as both destroyer and savior rise from the tribal cook fires of early man and endure in our LED world. At Image, it alights March in a tale told by a Little Bird.

Her world is no stranger to flame. Thirty years of war result in a ravaged North America ruled by an ambitious nationalist regime. Intent on expanding its influence, the American Empire captures adjoining territories and sweeps away any opposition. Little Bird is a 12-year-old girl, survivor of the defeated Canadian Resistance effort, an improbable spark to fan the fading coals of resistance into a renewed inferno.

A distinctly dark science-fiction miniseries, Little Bird was hatched in collaboration between writer Darcy Van Poelgeest (award-winning writer/director of the short films The Orchard, The Cure, and Corvus), artist Ian Bertram (Batman Eternal, Detective Comics, E Is for Extinction), colorist Matt Hollingsworth, and letterer Aditya Bidikar. Together they’ve fashioned a haunting, surreal journey of a young resistance fighter as she battles a theocratic, jingoistic authority for the fate of America. All the while discovering her evolving role in shaping its future.

Little Bird #1 will be available March 13 at better comic book stores everywhere. Meantime, those talented folks at Image have provided this preview.

From Image Comics: Director/screenwriter Darcy Van Poelgeest LITTLE BIRD #1 cover artboasts a long list of awards and accolades for his storytelling prowess and brings the same writing finesse to Ian Bertram’s breathtakingly detailed artwork in the gorgeous, hyper-detailed miniseries Little Bird launching from Image Comics this March.

“Little Bird is really just Ian and I sitting down and creating a comic we really want to read, inhabited with characters we genuinely love,” said Van Poelgeest. “It’s been an exciting and emotional journey creating this book, and I can’t wait for others to join us on that journey.”

Bertram burst onto the scene with his haunting, macabre collaboration with Peter J. Tomasi on House of Penance, the eerie, unsettling comic series about the Winchester haunted house. He brings a similarly intricate inking style to the pages of Little Bird.

With the same limitless scope as a new East of West or Saga—and the drama and surrealism of Akira—Little Bird follows a young resistance fighter in a science-fiction style reminiscent of Alejandro Jodorowsky.

In the world of Little Bird, North America has been devastated by three decades of war as the American Empire expands under an ultra-nationalist, theocratic government. But from the ashes of defeat rises Little Bird, a 12-year old girl who sets out to reignite the Canadian Resistance and discover her own identity in a world on fire.

Little Bird #1 (Diamond Code JAN190099) will be available on Wednesday, March 13. The final order cutoff deadline for comics shop retailers is Monday, Feb. 18.
