By Jarrod Jones. Undercover is our opportunity to lovingly gaze upon gorgeous works from magnificent artists. Each week, we single out the most striking covers that grace comic book stands and gush all over them.
Superman: American Alien #7, by Jock. (DC Comics)
A blur past your bus stop. A streak over the skyline. A hurricane. It’s Superman. A force of nature made kind by love. We all know the schpiel. And we are all intimately aware of the imagery. But this cover to Max Landis’ Superman: American Alien #7 is something else. With Jock’s street level art gallery approach to the Man of Steel, we come to the world’s greatest superhero as though he had just arrived to us. It creates new words. I’m thundersmacked by this cover. I’m incredistruck. I’m schmaued flat by it. Now somebody scrape me off the floor.
Jughead #6, by Cliff Chiang. (Archie Comics)
Life can get chaotic, what with appointments, work, school, expectations — it’s a mess on a good day. So while it’s important that you show up, it’s vital that you take moments for yourself. Jughead Jones gets it. And while his metabolism is visibly on some kind of Herculean level, the sentiment of Cliff Chiang’s lovely cover remains: sometimes, all you need is your music, some sunshine, and a sack of damn burgers. Look at this cover. It’s paradise.
Future Quest #1, by Joe Quinones and Bill Sienkiewicz. (DC Comics)
Holy moley, have I been looking forward to this. Ever since I spotted these variants to Jeff Parker and Doc Shaner’s Future Quest #1, I’ve been aching to bring them into my home, and today that day has arrived. It’s no secret that Joe Quinones and Bill Sienkiewicz make regular appearances on UNDERCOVER, but the fact that they’ve both contributed to the debut issue of what is probably going to be the best event crossover of the summer is too much for my dorky brain to handle. So long as this level of quality is thrown at DC’s iconic Hanna-Barbera love-in, you can bet I’ll be the first in line each month to swipe it up. (Related: either artist could launch a Space Ghost series and they’d have my money. Direct deposit.)
And that’s it! Don’t forget to share your favorite covers from this week’s releases in the comments section below!
